Vaibhav Suryavanshi goes past Babar Azam in Youth ODI runs at 16 or lower, leading India U19 to a 3-0 series victory over Australia.
Star Indian batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi on Friday went past ace Pakistan batter Babar Azam to become the second-highest run-scorer in Youth ODIs at the age of 16 or lower, after he scored 16 runs against Australia in the final game of the three-match series.
Suryavanshi has been in brilliant form, scoring 38 and 70 in the opening two Youth ODIs, steering India U19 to a series win against Australia.
But on Friday, India didn’t have a great start after electing to bat, losing captain Ayush Mhatre for just four runs, his third single-digit score in the series and Suryavanshi for 16. But that didn’t stop the latter from breaking records.
Even though he managed just 16 runs in the third ODI at Ian Healy Oval, Brisbane, Suryavanshi’s overall record remains astonishing. In just 11 innings, he has amassed 556 runs at a stunning average of 50.54.
Suryavanshi’s tally now includes 43 sixes, the highest ever in Youth ODI history, going past Unmukt Chand’s long-standing record.
Most Runs In Youth ODIs At 16 Or Lower
Hasan Raza: 727 runs
Vaibhav Suryavanshi: 556 runs
Babar Aza: 552 runs
Najmul Hossain Shanto: 546 runs
Ahmed Shahzad: 510 runs
What makes his feat historic is that only Pakistan’s Hasan Raza, back in 1997–98, had amassed more runs at this age.
Suryavanshi is also the youngest cricketer ever to score a fifty against Australia in Youth ODIs, going past Raza’s record by over a year.
At just 14 years and 181 days, Suryavanshi holds the records for the four youngest fifties in Youth ODI history.
Before Suryavanshi, Sarfaraz Khan (308 runs) held the record for the most Youth ODI runs by an Indian under 16, while Piyush Chawla was the only other 14-year-old to play at this level.
