BCCI launches INR 1 crore incentive for cricketers playing 14 first-class matches.
The BCCI on Sunday rolled out a lucrative incentive program to encourage players to play more matches in a season. The Indian cricket board has been adamant in prioritizing domestic cricket. Making a path-breaking decision, the BCCI set to splurge an additional INR 1 crore over a cricketer for playing 14 first-class matches in a season.
The decision was taken during the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai. Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who represented the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) in the AGM, spoke to the media and confirmed that the board is willing to pay more to those who will play more.
“It has been decided that if a player plays more domestic matches in a season, he will get more money. This will be an incentive for teams to reach the finals of domestic tournaments,” Harbhajan told reporters after the meeting.
“If a cricketer plays 14 first-class matches a season, he will get an additional match fee of Rs 1 crore,” he added.
According to the Times of India, the move was hailed as a game-changer for India’s domestic circuit. By directly linking financial rewards to match appearances, the BCCI hopes to encourage players to prioritise domestic cricket.
Mithun Minhas Elected As BCCI President
Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas was elected the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unopposed along with other members, including board’s secretary Devajit Saikia, during its 94th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at its headquarters here on Sunday.
The 45-year-old Manhas became the 37th president of the all-powerful cricket body after he succeeded former India cricketer Roger Binny, who resigned from the post last month after turning 70.
Manhas is the third consecutive First-Class cricketer to have taken over as the board’s president after Binny and former captain Sourav Ganguly.
Manhas, who featured in 157 First-Class, 130 List A and 55 IPL matches between 1997-98 and 2016-17, had emerged as the frontrunner following an informal meeting of the board’s power brokers in New Delhi on September 20 ahead of the final day of nomination.
