Suryakumar Yadav dismissed talk of poor form after scoring just 72 runs in six Asia Cup innings, saying he’s “out of runs, not form,” as India went unbeaten to clinch the title.

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav doesn’t think he’s ‘out of form’ despite scoring only 72 runs in six innings at the 2025 Asia Cup. He said he’s only ‘out of runs’ because his rhythm and preparations have been on point.

Suryakumar started the tournament decently, going not-out for seven runs against the UAE and again with 47 runs against Pakistan. The next four chances resulted in 18 runs, and his average and strike rate dropped to 18 and 101.41, respectively. In the final on Sunday, he couldn’t read the slower one from Shaheen Afridi and ended up mis-timing a drive in the air to mid-off, getting out cheaply in the powerplay.

“I feel I am not out of form, I feel I am out of runs,” Suryakumar said in the post-match press conference, after his side secured a five-wicket win over Pakistan in Dubai to win the title. “I believe more in what I am doing in the nets and my preparation. So in matches, things are on autopilot.”

Abhishek Sharma, the Player of the Tournament, was all praise for his captain for not letting his batting form spill over into his captaincy.

“I’ve felt personally that when you are not scoring runs, it is difficult to take the team along. But Surya bhai is the same irrespective of whether he has scored runs or not,” Abhishek said in the press conference.

Indeed, India didn’t lose a single game, and Suryakumar managed to get little to publicity for any obvious mistakes on the field.

‘We achieved what we wanted to’: Suryakumar

The skipper was pleased with how his side responded to various moments of pressure throughout the tournament to script the ‘perfect final’.

“What we wanted to achieve in this tournament, we have achieved,” he said. “There are a lot of things that you don’t get to achieve in a bilateral tournament. This was like a knockout tournament. As soon as we entered the Super Four, I told the boys that let’s approach it like a quarter-final, semi-final and final. So we played a semi-final type of game against Sri Lanka, and then it was a perfect final. There are nerves, responsibility and pressure, and it was a perfect final.”
