Syed Kirmani criticises the loss of gentlemanliness in cricket, comments on India-Pakistan Asia Cup tensions and requests politics be kept out of sports.
Former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani has said that the gentlemanliness of cricket has vanished across the world and there have been very rude gestures on the field, as he refuted India’s stance of not shaking hands with Pakistan cricketers as well as not receiving the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.
Noting Naqvi’s anti-India social media posts, the Indian team stood firm and no trophy presentation took place as he left the stadium, taking the title to his hotel.
The Asia Cup started without handshakes between India and Pakistan after their group-stage clash. India’s T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, dedicated the victory to the Indian Armed Forces.
“The way cricket is being played all around, I would not like to take the names of the countries, by and large, there has been no gentlemanliness in the game. There have been very rude, arrogant gestures on the field,” Kirmani said while speaking to ANI.
Kirmani shared that he was getting messages from friends worldwide asking, “What’s happened to the Indian team? What is this politics being played out on the field?”
“I am ashamed to listen to the comments from my friends. My friends say, ‘Your time was different. You played like gentlemen. But what has happened to the current era of cricketers globally?” Kirmani questioned.
After India’s Asia Cup win, Suryakumar announced he would donate his match fees from all seven matches to the Indian Armed Forces.
“It is very depressing to me the way things are going on in the sporting field, particularly in cricket. It isn’t the right thing that has happened. Politics shouldn’t be involved in sports in general,” Kirmani said.
“Leave politics behind. Whatever has transpired away from the sporting field, leave it there itself. Don’t relate it to your winning amount or whatever you are earning from this great game of cricket,” Kirmani added.
