West Indies’ decision to bat first on a seam-friendly surface raised eyebrows, but vice-captain Jomel Warrican revealed that such a decision was taken as the side did not want to bat in the fourth innings.
“Obviously, we knew the wicket would turn a lot here, so we didn’t want to bat last on this wicket. So, once we won the toss as a team, we decided that we would bat,” Warrican said.
Coming on the back of a dismal outing against Australia, where it lost all three Tests, the West Indies batters once again faltered, and Warrican admitted that they failed to seize the key moments.
“We need to seize those key moments. For example, we had a key partnership between Shai (Hope) and Roston (Chase) just before lunch, but we let India back into the game. That’s something as a unit we need to improve on and we definitely know we’re going to learn going forward,” he said.
After being bundled out for 162, the West Indies bowlers, too, failed to rise to the occasion. However, as India looks to take a big lead, Warrrican believes it’s important for the bowlers to be disciplined.
“Well, discipline is the key here right now. Obviously, our first innings total was not a big one, so we have to be extremely disciplined as a bowling unit, and we’re going to stick to our plans as long as possible, and also just continue encouraging and being positive. We will try to find a method to get wickets, but not over-attack,” he said.
“We need to put the ball in good areas, and take the chances when they come”.
