Mohammed Siraj continued from where he had left, returning to action with a four-wicket haul in Ahmedabad.

It was business as usual for Mohammed Siraj as he picked up a four-wicket haul on return to competitive cricket after a break of nearly two months. Siraj, who stepped up admirably whenever Jasprit Bumrah was rested during the England tour earlier this year, took 4/40 on the opening day of the first Test between India and West Indies in Ahmedabad.

On a green wicket, Siraj was licking his lips and used the ‘wobble seam’ to keep West Indies on a leash at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Partnering pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, he limited West Indies to 162-all out.

Siraj explains that he started bowling with the tilted seam after his in-swing, which comes naturally to him, disappeared in 2018.

“In 2018, I automatically started bowling outswing after in swing stopped. Then I realised, while practicing, that it’s the wobble seam – a term I heard recently. With the tilted seam, I have enjoyed a lot of success in international cricket so far. I realised this is a very important weapon for me. When outswing isn’t there, wobble seam works for me. There wasn’t much swing today, so I thought wobble seam will be more effective and stuck to it,” Siraj told reporters after the end of Day 1.
