Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, the Indian Cricket team showcased their strength with a commanding 46-run win against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram on January 31. This victory secured a 4–1 series win, highlighting India’s readiness as defending champions.

The match featured significant individual achievements and a powerful team performance that dismantled New Zealand. Ishan Kishan stood out with his first T20I century, while Arshdeep Singh bounced back from a shaky start to take five wickets. Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India appears well-prepared for the upcoming World Cup.

Ishan Kishan’s first T20I century and Suryakumar Yadav’s milestone

Choosing to bat first on a favorable pitch at Greenfield International Stadium, India scored 271/5, their third-highest total in T20I history, thanks to Kishan’s explosive batting. Returning from a minor injury, Kishan reached his century in just 42 balls, hitting 10 sixes and six fours. He received great support from skipper Suryakumar, who contributed 63 runs off 30 balls.

During this innings, Suryakumar became the fastest batter to reach 3,000 T20I runs, achieving this milestone in only 1,822 balls. The pair built a remarkable 137-run partnership off just 57 balls for the third wicket, putting India firmly in control of the game. Late contributions from Hardik Pandya (42 off 17) helped maintain a high scoring rate, setting a target that was tough for New Zealand to chase.

Arshdeep Singh’s impressive performance halts New Zealand

New Zealand began their chase energetically, with opener Finn Allen scoring 80 off 38 balls. The Kiwis reached 131/2 after 10 overs, largely thanks to Allen’s aggressive batting. However, the game changed as India’s bowlers tightened their control with strategic discipline.

Arshdeep made a strong comeback in his second spell, using effective knuckleballs and yorkers to disrupt the New Zealand middle order. He ended the match with career-best figures of 5/51, taking key wickets that halted the run chase. Joined by Axar Patel (3/33) and Varun Chakravarthy, India bowled New Zealand out for 225 in 19.4 overs. This 46-run victory not only clinched the series 4–1 but also highlighted India’s depth in bowling as they prepare for the World Cup.
