The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, featuring 20 teams competing in 55 matches. The tournament will be hosted at eight venues, including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai in India, as well as Colombo and Kandy in Sri Lanka. The defending champions, India, will begin the tournament on February 7 against the USA at Wankhede Stadium, with the final set for Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
T20 World Cup 2026: Ricky Ponting’s Predictions
Australian Cricket legend Ricky Ponting has chosen opener Abhishek Sharma as his pick for both the leading run-scorer and Player of the Tournament. Ponting, who was Abhishek’s first IPL coach at Delhi, mentioned he tried to convince the franchise not to trade the young player, seeing his potential from the very start. He believes Abhishek’s ‘lack of experience’ in major tournaments will help him perform without pressure.
“He’s a star. I think that (lack of experience) can be a real advantage. He can be the leading run-scorer and potentially the Player of the Tournament. If that happens, it makes India even tougher to beat. If he doesn’t perform, then they could be as vulnerable as anyone else. That’s how crucial I believe he is to India’s chances in this (T20) World Cup.” Ponting commented.
Following a strong series against New Zealand, where he had an average of 45.50 and a strike rate of 249.31, Abhishek is seen as the ‘X-factor’ who could make a significant impact if he starts well in the group stages.
“I was his first IPL coach. He debuted with me at 17 and made an immediate impression. I remember he hit his first ball for four or six with a classic straight bat. You could tell then that he was special. We eventually traded him, but I urged them not to. I knew he was a future superstar, and I still hold high hopes for him.” Ponting added.
India’s Title Defense Under Suryakumar Yadav
Under Suryakumar Yadav, India enters the 2026 tournament as the defending champions and the number one T20I team in the world. They are in Group A along with Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA, starting with their match against the USA at Wankhede Stadium on February 7.
The squad features a strong mix of experienced players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, along with rising stars who have excelled in recent series. With the tournament being co-hosted in India and Sri Lanka, the home advantage in familiar conditions makes India the favorites to be the first team to win consecutive Men’s T20 World Cup titles.
