Australia faced a tough time in their recent three-match T20I series against Pakistan, losing all the games. The team’s performance was lacking, with scores of just 108 and 96 in the final matches.

Australia struggled to cope with the low and slow pitches, as bowlers Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Usman Tariq, and Abrar Ahmed effectively challenged the Australian batsmen. This series loss raised concerns about Australia’s readiness for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Despite this setback, former captain Ricky Ponting remains optimistic. He believes that under Mitchell Marsh’s leadership, the team will make it to the semi-finals of the World Cup 2026.

“Australia has a good chance like other top teams. The squad looks solid,” Ponting stated in an interview with ICC.

He added, “India are the favorites due to the local conditions and their talented lineup. They will pose challenges, but I think Australia will reach the semi-final.”

Injuries have affected Australia’s squad, with Pat Cummins ruled out, and Josh Hazlewood still recovering from injury. Tim David is also facing fitness issues.

Ponting has confidence in Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell to perform well for the team. Australia will kick off their World Cup campaign on February 11 against Ireland. All matches in the group stage will take place in Sri Lanka, where the pitches at R Premadasa Stadium and Pallekele are expected to favor spinners.
