Shahid Afridi has commented on Pakistan’s decision to boycott the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 match against India. The teams are set to play on February 15, but Pakistan has been urged to skip the match in protest against the ICC’s choice to remove Bangladesh from the tournament.
The Pakistan Cricket Board backed Bangladesh’s request to move their World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, but the request was denied, resulting in Scotland taking Bangladesh’s place.
Afridi, who has frequently advocated for separating politics from sports, expressed disappointment over Pakistan’s choice not to play India, while also supporting his government’s stance.
“I’ve always believed cricket can open doors when politics closes them. Unfortunately, Pakistan won’t play India at the #T20WorldCup, but I support my government’s decision. This is a chance for @ICC to demonstrate through actions, not just words, that it is impartial and fair to all members,” Afridi wrote on X.
Afridi participated in the World Championship of Legends with Pakistan Legends, where India Legends declined to compete against them twice.
“Sports connect people, but politics can destroy everything. One bad influence can ruin the entire atmosphere,” Afridi remarked, responding to Shikhar Dhawan’s comments on Pakistan.
It is surprising that Afridi is now in favor of political involvement from Pakistan’s government regarding the World Cup.
