Moeen Ali, a former England cricketer, has expressed his desire to become the head coach of the England Cricket team. The team’s inconsistent results during Brendon McCullum’s coaching have sparked interest in Moeen’s coaching ambitions.
The 38-year-old, who retired from International cricket in 2024, is now playing franchise cricket while gearing up for matches in the PSL 2026 season in Pakistan.
Moeen Ali Calls England Coaching His “Dream”
Moeen Ali shared his coaching dreams with ESPNCricinfo, stating that becoming the England coach would be very meaningful to him.
Moeen Ali said:
“That’s the dream. One hundred percent, that’d be the dream … I think one day, I would want to be a top international coach. Definitely.”
Moeen is working towards this goal by studying for his ECB Level Three coaching qualifications. His father, Munir, was also a coach, which has made coaching a lifelong pursuit for him.
He added:
“I used to coach for my dad’s academy, before I played for England. I used to coach heavily. My brothers all coach and coaching is part of our genetics in some ways. It’s a journey that I’ve always been on.”
Moeen’s Old-School Coaching View
While Brendon McCullum’s aggressive coaching style has changed England’s approach to the game, Moeen prefers traditional cricket principles. He believes that as T20 cricket grows, the focus on technique is diminishing, which could negatively impact players.
He further said:
“I’m a massive believer in technique. I always have been. I think the one that’s lacking in cricket right now generally, with so much T20 cricket – which is great, obviously, in a way – is technique, and having the foundation of proper batting, like in Test matches.”
Moeen’s commitment to coaching is evident through his emphasis on solid technical training, aimed at helping athletes in Test cricket.
No Rush to Take Up Coaching Role
Moeen has proven his leadership skills and sets high targets for himself, but he is not rushing into a coaching position with England. He wants to explore his options further, believing that this process will take time.
“It feels miles away. [But] when you’re playing club cricket or domestic cricket, you feel like England’s miles away… Things can change. Things can happen quickly.”
He plans to begin working as a pundit while continuing his playing career before deciding his next steps.

Moeen Ali currently lives in Dubai and will travel to Pakistan for PSL 2026 matches slated for March. He is returning to the league after six years, having signed with Karachi Kings.
He has also confirmed his involvement in the T20 Blast 2026 for Yorkshire. Recently, Moeen has participated in several global leagues, including CPL, ILT20, and Abu Dhabi T10.
During his England career, Moeen played 68 Tests, 138 ODIs, and 92 T20Is, helping the team win the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
