COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Tensions escalated during the Asia Cup when India captain Suryakumar Yadav declined to shake hands with Salman Ali Agha. Throughout the tournament, there were several heated exchanges, leading to Suryakumar and Pakistan’s Haris Rauf being fined for violating the ICC’s code of conduct.
India emerged as the Asia Cup champions but did not accept the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Political and military tensions have resulted in the two teams not playing a bilateral series for several years.
Since 2008, India has not traveled to Pakistan, while Pakistan visited India for the 2023 World Cup but has participated in ICC tournaments at neutral venues since then.
India has won 12 out of 16 T20 matches against Pakistan, holding a strong 7-1 record in the eight T20 World Cup games played since 2007, with one match tied.
“We don’t have a positive record against them in World Cups,” Agha remarked. “However, every new match is a fresh start, and we need to play well to succeed.”
“History cannot be changed but can teach us lessons. We’ve learned from it and aim for a strong performance to secure a win,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that his team aims to focus on the present without being hindered by past memories.
There has also been scrutiny regarding Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq’s bowling action. Indian media has raised questions about the legality of his style due to a noticeable pause before delivery.
Agha defended Tariq, stating, “He has been cleared twice and follows all ICC requirements for International play. I’m unsure why there is so much speculation about him. He’s accustomed to it and remains unfazed.”
Additionally, the fitness of India’s aggressive opening batter Abhishek Sharma has been a topic of discussion, as he missed the match against Namibia due to a stomach infection.
