Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez believes that the ongoing conversation around Usman Tariq has given Salman Ali Agha’s team a psychological advantage before their T20 World Cup match against India on February 15. Tariq’s unique bowling style and variations have generated considerable discussion, especially leading up to the high-stakes India-Pakistan match. Hafeez indicated that the focus on the young bowler may have shifted some pressure onto the opposing team.
Both Salman Ali Agha and Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav addressed questions about the mystery spinner during press briefings. Supporters and analysts are weighing in on his potential impact. Despite having played only four T20Is, Tariq has taken 11 wickets at an impressive average of 7.9. Hafeez suggested that India seems unsettled.
“Looking at it from a Cricket standpoint, the attention on Usman Tariq has worked in our favor mentally. The focus isn’t on Babar Azam or others right now. Though he’s played little for Pakistan, he has clearly created concern in the Indian camp. They’ve even adjusted parts of their training sessions around him,” Hafeez stated.
“When have we ever seen such concentration on one cricketer? The build-up and global attention are considerable, and it’s more than just the result. Everyone is keen on what Usman Tariq might contribute,” he added.
Hafeez expressed confidence in Tariq, noting that the spinner has the ability and calmness to influence matches in Pakistan’s favor. He advised Salman Ali Agha to use him as a key wicket-taker rather than simply a bowler focused on containment. According to Hafeez, the 28-year-old’s main strength lies in creating pressure through aggressive bowling.
“I’m eager to see how Salman Agha approaches captaincy and uses Usman Tariq. If he sees him only as a containment option, Pakistan might miss out. Tariq should be used with attacking intent. Bringing him in as early as the sixth over could be impactful, as that phase is crucial for the bowling side and usually involves the leading bowler,” he mentioned.
“I’m looking forward to the game plan they create around Usman Tariq. If he is used as a genuine wicket-taker, he can play a significant role,” he concluded.
