Bangladesh Cricket is eager to mend its cricketing relationship with India after they chose not to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 due to their request for a venue change being declined.
Officials and players from the board have stressed the need for strong bilateral relations between the two countries. The decision to skip the major event has led to discussions within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about enhancing ties with India.
The absence from the 2026 World Cup is seen as an unusual setback, and efforts are now directed toward constructive progress.
Aminul Haque, the newly appointed State Minister for Youth and Sports in Bangladesh, addressed the issue. He shared his goal of improving connections with neighboring countries, highlighting it as a priority.
“After my oath-taking ceremony today, I met with the Deputy High Commissioner of India at the Parliament building. We discussed the T20 World Cup issue. He was friendly, and I also spoke to him in a cordial manner. I expressed my desire to resolve this matter quickly through talks, as we aim to maintain good relations with all neighboring countries,” Haque said.
Haque also mentioned that he does not fully agree with the Board’s decision to miss the 2026 World Cup and believes it could have been avoided under different circumstances.
“Due to diplomatic issues, we could not participate in the World Cup. If those problems had been addressed earlier, our team might have taken part,” he added.
As a result of Bangladesh’s withdrawal, Scotland took their place in the tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The Scottish team had a respectable showing, although they did not advance to the Super 8 stage. They secured one win against Italy in the group stage, competing well against England as well.
