During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Shivam Dube stood out as a key player for India. His impressive 31-ball 66 led to a win against the Netherlands on February 18. Behind his success is the guidance of MS Dhoni, whose insights have shaped Dube’s approach to the game.

Dube, awarded Player of the Match for his impactful performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, shared insights about how Dhoni’s advice changed his game, particularly when facing short-pitched balls that previously posed a challenge.

MS Dhoni’s advice that aided Shivam Dube with short balls

In a post-match interview, Dube discussed a pivotal moment early in his IPL career when he struggled with short balls. Dhoni’s straightforward but effective advice made a significant difference.

“Mahi bhai told me that hitting a six isn’t always necessary; you can score runs through boundaries or singles,” Dube shared.

This guidance, suggesting a more measured approach to short balls, contrasted with the typical instinct to hit aggressively. Dube acknowledged that many players believe the key to overcoming such challenges is to try hitting the ball for six.

Dube’s growth: Turning weaknesses into strengths

Early in his career, Dube faced issues with short-pitched deliveries. Despite his significant power and height, he found it tough when facing fast bowlers clocking over 140 km/h.

“When I first joined the IPL, I had trouble with short balls and couldn’t hit them properly,” Dube reflected. “I realized I had the ability to dominate if I targeted my weaknesses, so I worked hard on it during the offseason.”

His improvement included a lot of practice, but he emphasized that the shift in mindset was more crucial than just technical fixes. His performance against short balls dramatically improved, with his average rising from 23.5 in 2021-22 to 84 in 2023.

The Dhoni-CSK influence: A bond that reshaped Dube’s career

Dube has been with Chennai Super Kings since IPL 2022, developing a strong connection with Dhoni. While Dhoni’s playing days are winding down, his mentorship continues to benefit Indian Cricket.

“I owe a lot to Chennai Super Kings and Mahi bhai for bringing out my best,” Dube stated previously during the Afghanistan series in 2024. “They’ve always shown faith in me and encouraged me. Coaches like Stephen Fleming and Mike Hussey believed in my potential.”

The CSK management’s decision to support Dube’s batting order despite early challenges created a safe environment for him to apply Dhoni’s teachings.

Dube’s effective use of Dhoni’s advice was evident in India’s last group-stage match against the Netherlands. After India struggled at 74 for 3, Dube took his time, scoring just six runs off his first 11 deliveries while remaining calm against a close lbw call.

Instead of panicking, he focused on rotating the strike and seizing scoring chances, aligning with Dhoni’s strategy. This patience paid off as he targeted slower deliveries effectively.

He reached his half-century in just 25 balls, hitting four boundaries and six sixes. Partnering with Hardik Pandya, he added a vital 119 runs in the last 10 overs, with India managing 75 runs in the final five overs. He was finally out in the 19th over for 66 off 31 balls, having already made a significant impact.

In addition to his batting feat, Dube also excelled with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 35 runs, further hindering the Netherlands’ chase.
