England Test captain Ben Stokes called the recent Ashes series and its aftermath the “hardest period” of his captaincy. He expressed his support for coach Brendon McCullum and Director of Cricket Rob Key in an open letter to fans on his official social media.
The ECB stated that McCullum, Stokes, and Key will continue in their positions after a disappointing away series where England lost 4-1 to Australia. Stokes had a challenging series, taking 15 wickets at an average of 25.13 and scoring 184 runs in 10 innings. He left the final Test due to a groin injury and struggled to guide an inexperienced England bowling attack throughout the series.
“Being England captain is the greatest honour a player can have. It has its highs and lows, and at times, it feels like it’s the only thing in your life,” Stokes noted in an Instagram post to England cricket supporters.
There were reports of tension between Stokes and McCullum, with McCullum wanting the team to adopt more aggressive strategies, while Stokes felt Australia had countered their style of play effectively. Rob Key quickly dismissed these rumors. Stokes reiterated his support for Key and McCullum in his message.
“The last three months have been incredibly tough for me as a captain, testing me in many ways. I’m sure other captains have faced similar challenges. Baz, Rob, and I are committed to moving this team forward. We’re learning from our mistakes, and you often learn more from failure than from success.
“I have gained a lot of insight about myself, but what I want fans to know is that I truly love cricket, I love this team, and I love being England captain. I’m excited to continue this journey with Baz and Rob.
“We value every supporter. We strive to bring happiness and pride to our fans, and we will do our best to achieve that moving forward. Looking forward to seeing you all in June for the start of the Test Match summer,” Stokes concluded.
