Former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara is retiring from county Cricket ahead of the 2026 English summer. He had already stopped playing First-Class cricket and was only involved in the T20 Blast and the One Day Cup.
Bopara has enjoyed a successful domestic career in England, playing for Essex, Sussex, and Northamptonshire, where he concluded his professional journey.
With 171 caps for England, Bopara participated in every season of the T20 Blast since its inception in 2003. He has made 236 appearances in the domestic T20 league, scoring 5,290 runs and taking 169 wickets.
“I’m not stepping away from cricket completely. I really thought hard about the Blast. That was a challenging decision. However, I’m looking forward to new opportunities in commentary, which I can’t ignore. It’s tough because I feel like I’ve been part of county cricket for so long. I’m okay with my decision. It feels right, especially after performing well in last year’s quarter-finals against Surrey,” Bopara shared with ESPNcricinfo.
The match Bopara mentioned was his outstanding performance for Northamptonshire Steelbacks against Surrey in the T20 Blast quarter-finals last summer, where he scored an unbeaten 105 runs off just 46 balls, leading his team to the Finals Day.
“I’ve been very lucky to play county cricket for 25 years. It has been a huge part of my life, providing me with opportunities, wonderful memories, and great friendships. Lasting 25 years in any sport is something I’m really proud of,” he added.
Though Bopara is ending his playing career, he plans to stay involved with cricket. He aims to focus on coaching and media work post-retirement. He is currently in his second season as head coach of Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
“I have plenty to offer the game. I’d love to share my experience through mentoring, coaching, or guiding younger players. I’m open to various roles in cricket, including playing in different settings, coaching, or other opportunities,” he said.
Bopara has also been shortlisted for the inaugural T20 Hall of Fame presented by Vitality, joining other T20 legends like Joe Denly, James Vince, and Luke Wright.
