Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has shared why he opted out of the IPL 2026. He did not participate in the recent mini-auction after being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who signed him for INR 2.60 crore.
Throughout his IPL career, Zampa has played for four teams: the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has taken 31 wickets in 22 matches, achieving his best figures of 6/19 during his debut season in 2016.
Zampa mentioned that he decided not to join the IPL as he feels he wouldn’t be compensated fairly compared to players with different skill sets.
“I pulled out of the IPL this year. To be honest, for someone with my skill set, the pay isn’t comparable to what others receive. Considering the time commitment of the IPL, continuing didn’t seem practical for me,” Zampa said on the ARY Podcast.
Currently, Zampa is playing in the Pakistan Super League for Karachi Kings, led by fellow Australian David Warner. He was signed for PKR 4.5 crore, which is around INR 1.51 crore. So far, he has taken three wickets in two matches with an economy rate of 4.62.
He also mentioned that his decision to join the PSL came unexpectedly while he was initially planning for a break. The 34-year-old expressed that he is enjoying his time in the league.
“I was going to take a break, but the PSL came onto my radar about a month ago. It all happened quickly, but I’m having a good time,” Zampa added.
Zampa holds the record for the most wickets by an Australian in T20 Cricket, with a total of 147 wickets in 115 games.
