South Africa bowler Kagiso Rabada has faced criticism after the Gujarat Titans lost to Punjab Kings in their first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 in Mullanpur.
Rabada’s recent performance has declined compared to his strong showing when he won the Purple Cap in 2020. That year, he excelled in both taking wickets and controlling runs, ending with an economy rate of 8.34. He maintained a similar level of performance in IPL seasons 2021 and 2022, keeping his economy under 8.50.
However, the past three seasons leading up to IPL 2026 tell a different story. Rabada’s economy rates have been 10.09, 8.86, and 11.57, managing only 20 wickets in 21 matches during this period. His struggles continued this season, where he finished with figures of 3-0-34-1 in IPL 2026.
Dale Steyn noted that Rabada seems to be looking for answers in his bowling lately.
“Just by the eye, it looks like he hasn’t performed as well as one would hope,” Steyn said, as quoted by Espncrinfo.
Steyn compared Rabada’s situation with Marco Jansen, who has been performing well. Jansen’s recent game of 1/20 for PBKS showcased his strength, which Steyn feels Rabada has struggled to maintain.
“On the flipside, you’ve got Jansen, who just seems to be getting better. He’s been part of winning teams, and I believe that builds confidence. Jansen has stepped up where KG has not had as many achievements, and his performance reflects that,” Steyn remarked.
Despite Rabada’s current form, Steyn hopes for a strong comeback from him.
“I’m hoping this season he can really shine because he is a genuine wicket-taker and knows what it takes to excel. But can he find something extra in his game? He’s been close but maybe just needs a few more wickets and a bit of luck for this season to turn it around,” he added.
The Gujarat Titans will play against Rajasthan Royals next at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on April 4.
