The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is set to undergo a major redevelopment by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). This project aims to increase the stadium’s capacity and enhance the experience for fans attending Royal Challengers Bengaluru games.

This initiative follows meetings between KSCA officials, including president Venkatesh Prasad, and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. The plan includes adding approximately 20,000 seats to the current capacity of about 34,000.

However, there is no specific timeline for completing the renovation. Prasad has noted that the project is complex and will take time to execute.

“We haven’t set a timeline for completing the renovation because it’s a lengthy process. We need to invite bids and hold various meetings for approvals, so it will take considerable time. But we aim to transform the stadium during my tenure,” Prasad said.

Prasad pointed out that this renovation is not a recent decision but rather a long-held goal to enhance the experience for fans.

“This isn’t about making changes as soon as I took office. I’ve been thinking about this for the last 10 years. Spectators are our biggest stakeholders, and we must provide them with the best match experience possible,” he added.

He mentioned that the stadium, built in the 1970s, must adapt to the rapid growth of Bengaluru.

“The stadium is quite old. While we respect those who built it, it needs to evolve. Originally constructed with a vision for future growth, Bengaluru has surpassed those expectations, and the stadium must adapt accordingly,” he mentioned.

Prasad also referred to upgrades at other venues, such as Wankhede Stadium and Eden Gardens, stressing that it is time for Chinnaswamy Stadium to follow suit.

“Many of the facilities at the stadium are temporary and inadequate. Commentators’ boxes and spectator amenities need improvement, and that is essential,” he concluded.

Currently, RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, are the IPL champions and have won both of their matches in the IPL 2026, held at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
