Former fast bowler and current Delhi Capitals coach Munaf Patel is supporting Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach. He appreciates Gambhir’s strong personality and his ability to make difficult decisions without worrying about potential backlash.

Munaf feels that if Gambhir is replaced by another coach soon, it could negatively affect discipline within the team. He believes that managing today’s cricketers requires a strong presence.

“If a head coach like Gautam Gambhir is removed, then handling the players will get very difficult. He is straightforward and tells the truth, which not everyone likes. Gambhir is the only one managing the players effectively. Other coaches wouldn’t be able to do it like he does because he is respected—he prioritizes Cricket over money,” Munaf Patel said on The Times of India Sports’ Bombay Sport Exchange podcast.

Munaf highlighted the challenges Gambhir faces as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. The former batter has made many critics, including some in the BCCI, but he remains focused on doing what is best for the team.

“If Gambhir leaves after three years, things will likely get disorganized. He maintains control and is not afraid to drop players when needed. A coach must have authority; being friends with players could undermine the system. Think about how many critics Gambhir has made while doing this job. Eight out of ten members in the commentary panel might not support him, and four out of five selectors might disagree with him, yet he continues to work hard,” he added.

Gambhir had big shoes to fill when he took over from the legendary Rahul Dravid as India’s coach. Still, he demonstrated his leadership skills by guiding the Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 Indian Premier League title.

Under Gambhir’s guidance, India won two ICC trophies, claiming the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, becoming the first men’s team to hold the title twice.
