The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has paid further tributes to one of the greatest men’s Test batters, Cheteshwar Pujara, who retired from all forms of the game on Sunday (August 24).

In a long media press release, the board hailed the former number three’s ‘true legacy’ of absorbing pressure, ‘anchoring India’s most memorable victories’ and becoming a ‘bridge between eras’.

The Indian Test stalwart retired with 7195 runs in 103 matches, an average of 43.60, with 55 fifties, and 19 centuries. But, as the board said, the stats didn’t do justice to the career he had for India and Saurashtra.

“While the numbers reflect his mighty contributions, Pujara’s true legacy lies in his ability to absorb pressure, blunt world-class attacks, and anchor India’s most memorable victories. He became the bridge between eras, carrying forward the values of discipline and patience while adapting to the modern demands of the game. At home, his centuries built India’s fortress; overseas, his defiance gave the team belief that improbable Test victories abroad were possible,” the BCCI’s statement said.

“Pujara’s retirement closes a celebrated chapter in Indian cricket, one that will be remembered for his classical batting style, unmatched concentration, and his ability to anchor India in challenging situations. His arrival at the crease brought stability, consistency, and the assurance of a fighter who would not yield easily,” the board added.

Secretary Devajit Saikia also made a comment in the release, saying that the right-hander ‘personified’ Test cricket’s spirit.

“Cheteshwar Pujara’s career is a shining example of perseverance and selflessness. He personified the spirit of Test cricket. His ability to grind opposition attacks and his immense powers of concentration made him the bulwark of India’s batting. He showed that it was possible to succeed at the highest level while staying true to traditional values of the game. His commitment to Indian cricket, both at the international and domestic level, has been outstanding. We thank him for everything he has given to the game and to the country,” Saikia said.
