The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has issued a statement regarding the pitch after the first Test match between England and New Zealand wrapped up in less than four days. The match could have concluded a day earlier if it hadn’t rained on Day 3.
The MCC acknowledged that the pitch did not meet the standards expected at Lord’s Cricket Ground, which recently hosted its 150th Test match.
“We recognize that the pitch for this Test has shown more variable bounce than we would have preferred. We hold ourselves to high standards and are naturally frustrated when a surface does not meet these expectations,” the official MCC statement said.
The authority explained that the pitch played inconsistently throughout the match. The MCC attributed this to sudden weather changes in the days leading up to the game. They are now working on solutions to prevent this from recurring.
The MCC invests significantly each year in preparing the main square at Lord’s, using research, technology, and expertise to create pitches that provide a balanced contest between bat and ball. The unusual hot and dry weather in May, followed by wet conditions before the match, created challenges for pitch preparation. However, we understand the need to act quickly and will focus on all aspects of pitch development as outlined in our recently published MCC Cricket Strategy 2026-29,” the statement added.
