Rob Key, England Men’s Director of Cricket, has chosen Joe Root as the interim captain instead of vice-captain Harry Brook. This change follows Ben Stokes being excluded from the second Test match due to a nightclub incident with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, which breached team curfew early Monday.
Key emphasized that this was not the right time for Brook to take on the captaincy. He believes that Root is capable of guiding the team through tough moments, as he has frequently done with his batting. Key pointed out Root’s ongoing commitment to the team and expressed confidence in his leadership during this challenging time.
“I just don’t think it’s the right time for Harry Brook. He’s an excellent captain and has excelled in white-ball cricket. However, that’s a lot to handle right now. Joe Root has consistently delivered for England in difficult situations, and I believe it’s the right choice. It’s not the right moment for Harry, and this keeps options open for the future,” Key stated to the ECB.
It’s important to note that Brook was previously involved in a nightclub incident in New Zealand in 2025, which resulted in a GBP 30,000 fine. When asked if this influenced the decision against naming him interim captain, Key highlighted multiple factors, including Brook’s upcoming role in leading the white-ball series against India, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs.
“There are many reasons behind this decision. We are close to selecting a white-ball team for a crucial series against India in T20 and ODI formats. Given everything on Harry’s plate, we want to avoid overwhelming him,” he added.
Both Stokes and Atkinson have been omitted from the squad for the second Test match against New Zealand, which begins on June 17. Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox have been recalled to the team.
