The situation involving Bangladesh cricketer Nayeem Hasan has escalated, leading to the suspension of three police officers. A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident that occurred Friday night near Lalkhan Bazar in Chattogram.
As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the suspended officers include constable Mohammad Rasel Chowdhury, sub-inspector Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, and another unnamed officer in charge of police operations management. Suspension letters have been issued as authorities take action on this matter.
Shawkat Ali, the commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), visited Nayeem’s home on Saturday. He assured the player and his family that a thorough and unbiased investigation would be conducted regarding the officers involved. His visit was aimed at reinforcing accountability during a time of growing public concern.
Nayeem, a player for Prime Bank Cricket Club, thanked the supporters who stood by him during the incident. He shared that when police attempted to forcibly take him to the Khulshi Police Station, about 100 to 120 locals followed him, ensuring his safety and preventing further issues.
“When they placed me in the CNG, I felt very scared. If the 100 to 120 supporters and locals had not been there, the situation could have been different,” Nayeem told The Daily Star.
“I especially want to thank them. When the police took me to Khulshi Police Station, I appealed to them. The supporters also accompanied me from Lalkhan Bazar to the police station that night.”
The case has drawn significant public outrage, with calls for justice from fellow cricketers, the public, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). With the investigation now in full swing, attention is focused on the committee’s findings and the resulting disciplinary actions.
