Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was put on the spot in an interesting interaction at the sidelines of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025 final on Sunday. Asked to name Indian players which fit the bill to a particular word thrown his way, Gambhir came up with a series of quick responses.
When asked which player comes to his mind upon hearing the tag ‘Desi Boy’, Gambhir wasted no time in naming his former Delhi and India teammate Virat Kohli. The legendary batter, who is known for an unabashed outlook and confident streak on the field, does indeed fit the tag perfectly.
Kohli, who retired from Tests earlier this year after having already quit T20 Internationals at the end of last year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA, is currently in London and was recently seen training for his much-anticipated return to international cricket in October with the three-match ODI series against arch-rivals Australia.
Earlier, on hearing the word ‘clutch’, Gambhir said maestro Sachin Tendulkar comes to his mind in an interaction that involved multiple unique answers to questions posed to him. For the word ‘speed’, Gambhir quickly named ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah.
When asked to name a ‘golden arm’, Gambhir took the name of his former Kolkata Knight Riders player Nitish Rana.
Gambhir feels the word ‘stylish’ suits his new Indian Test skipper, Shubman Gill, perfectly, having seen the young and confident Indian cricketer take up the mantle of India’s Test side with distinction on the recent tour of England.
The coach also named his predecessor and batting great, Rahul Dravid, as Mr Consistent and another of his esteemed ex-teammates, VVS Laxman, as a run-machine.
For the tag of a ‘death-overs specialist’, Gambhir said since he had already chosen Bumrah, he will go for former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan.
Gambhir made a funny remark on flamboyant Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, calling him the closest to someone who is ‘always late’. He also unsurprisingly took Pant’s name when asked who among the cricketers is the funniest.
