In what has come as a major blow to India’s chances at the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup, star wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the tournament with an injury to her left knee. BCCI have named Uma Chetry as Yastika’s replacement.
Although the 24-year-old would have needed to warm the benches during the World Cup in the presence of Richa Ghosh, Yastika was in brilliant touch during India A’s recent tour of Australia, where she scored 42, 66 and 59 in the three unofficial ODIs.
Yastika hasn’t appeared in India colours since October, having featured in an ODI against New Zealand in October.
“The Women’s Selection Committee named Uma Chetry as a replacement for Yastika Bhatia in India’s squad for the three-match IDFC First Bank ODI series against Australia and the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025,” a statement from BCCI read.
“Yastika Bhatia sustained an injury to her left knee during India’s preparatory camp in Vizag. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring Yastika Bhatia’s progress and the team wishes Yastika Bhatia a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
Uma, now included in India’s team for the Australia series and the World Cup, has been withdrawn from the India A team, all set to play a World Cup warm-up game.
Notably, Uma hasn’t featured in any ODIs yet, having played seven T20Is till now.
The home World Cup is India’s best chance to win an elusive ICC title, which has remained far from them ever since the tournament’s inception. They played the final against England in 2017 but fell agonisingly short of the target.
India’s updated squad for ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (WK), Kranti Gaud, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Sneh Rana, Uma Chetry (WK)
