Chennai Super Kings star all-rounder Sam Curran on Friday, September 5, was added to England’s T20I squad for the upcoming home series against South Africa and Ireland. The English team will host the Proteas in a three-match T20I series starting September 10 and then travel to Ireland for a three-match away series. While Harry Brook has been retained as England’s captain for the home series against the South African team, young Jacob Bethell will captain in the three T20Is against Ireland.
Curran, who played a big role in Oval Invincibles’ third straight men’s Hundred title win last week, will replace opener Ben Duckett in the squad for the South Africa series.
The left-handed batter has been rested for the T20I series.
“England Men have confirmed changes to the squads for the forthcoming Vitality IT20 series against South Africa and the subsequent IT20 series in Ireland. Opening batter Ben Duckett will be rested for the three-match series against South Africa,” the ECB release stated.
“Surrey all-rounder Sam Curran has been added to the squad for the fixtures against South Africa, which commence at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, next Wednesday. Curran has also been included in the squad for the IT20 tour of Ireland later this month,” it added.
In addition to Duckett, who also played in all five Tests of the home series against India and one against Zimbabwe in Trent Bridge as well, fast bowler Matthew Potts has also been released from the T20I squad for the Ireland series. He will play in the final rounds of the County Championship for Durham.
“Durham seamer Matthew Potts has been released from the Ireland IT20 squad to enable him to represent his county in the final rounds of the Rothesay County Championship,” the release informed.
27-year-old Curran, who won the Player of the Tournament award in the 2022 T20 World Cup, which England won under Jos Buttler’s leadership, last played a T20I match for the English team against the West Indies in Gros Islet, St. Lucia, on November 17, 2024.
He has 356 runs and 54 wickets to his credit in 58 T20Is played so far.
Curran played five matches in IPL 2025 for Chennai Super Kings and scored 114 runs, which includes an 88-run knock against Punjab Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He also accounted for the dismissal of one batter for the Men in Yellow.
