Senior India and Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer has opened up on dealing with exclusions from the national squads, admitting that it is ‘frustrating’ when he knows that he deserved a place, but adding that his feelings don’t stop him from supporting the ones who are selected. He said the ‘goal’ is always the team’s success.
Shreyas was recently left out of India’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, which begins on September 9. Despite being one of the best-performing batters in IPL 2025 — over 600 runs at a 175-plus strike-rate — and leading Punjab Kings to just their second final, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said there was no space for him in the team that was quite settled under Suryakumar Yadav in the post-2024 T20 World Cup period.
He has seen a similar fate in other formats, too. In ODIs, he was about to be dropped from the team in February this year, despite being one of the best and most consistent batters in the format. It was only because of a last-minute injury to Virat Kohli that Gautam Gambhir stuck with Iyer, and he cemented his place.
“It is only frustrating when you know that you deserve to be in the team, in the playing XI. At that time, it’s frustrating,” Shreyas was quoted as saying on the iQOO India podcast. “But at the same time, when you know that someone is performing and playing consistently for the team and bringing their best, you support them. And eventually, the goal is for the team to win. When the team is winning, everyone is happy,” he said.
“Even if you don’t get a chance, you have to make sure that you do your work ethically. It’s not like you do it only when someone is watching. Even when no one is watching, you have to keep doing your work,” he added.
Shreyas has now been picked to lead the India ‘A’ squad for two multi-day games against Australia ‘A’ in Lucknow.
India ‘A’ squad: Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhimanyu Easwaran, N Jagadeesan (WK), Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel (VC & WK), Devdutt Padikkal, Harsh Dubey, Ayush Badoni, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Tanush Kotian, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Khaleel Ahmed, Manav Suthar, Yash Thakur, KL Rahul* and Mohammed Siraj*.
(*Both Rahul and Siraj will be added to the team for the second game.)
