South Africa’s woes intensified following their largest ODI defeat to England. On Monday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the team, captained by Temba Bavuma, has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the third ODI at The Rose Bowl.

The ICC revealed that South Africa has been fined five percent of their match fee. Javagal Srinath, former Indian speedster and a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, imposed the penalty after South Africa was found to be one over short of the target, even after accounting for time allowances.

The charge was issued by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Russell Warren, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Mike Burns. Captain Bavuma admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction, making a formal hearing unnecessary.

Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate offences, stipulates that players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.

In the inconsequential match, England’s dominant performance was led by Jacob Bethell (110), who scored his maiden century for the hosts. Joe Root (100) showcased his impeccable technique, joining Bethell in the spotlight with a spectacular hundred. Jamie Smith (62) and Jos Buttler (62*) contributed with their aggressive cameos, helping England reach a formidable 414/5, their highest score against South Africa.

After struggling in the previous two matches, England regained confidence with the ball, thanks to Jofra Archer. The England paceman baffled the Proteas batters with his intense pace and challenging lengths, dismantling the visitors’ batting line-up and leaving them at a fragile 18/5.

The troubled visitors faced further challenges from Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, and England’s leading spinner Adil Rashid, as the Three Lions secured an impressive 342-run victory. Despite losing the three-match series 2-1, England celebrated the largest margin of victory in ODIs.
