Harbhajan Singh is nominated by Punjab Cricket Association for BCCI’s AGM, possibly vying for key roles in the board.
India spinner Harbhajan Singh could reportedly be in the running for a post in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to The Indian Express, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has nominated him as their representative for the BCCI’s upcoming crucial Annual General Meeting (AGM).
This AGM, scheduled for September, is significant mainly because one agenda item is to either fill the newly vacant post or ratify some others, including the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer. One representative of the General Body in the BCCI Apex Council of the BCCI and two representatives of the General Body in the IPL Governing Council are also likely to be part of the discussions.
According to the report, the BCCI is likely to continue keeping elections as a formality and decide the positions after ‘discussions’. Harbhajan, who has got his first nomination, could be up for one of the roles. A double World Cup winner, Harbhajan is a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha (Indian upper house) from the Aam Aadmi Party, the ruling regime in Punjab, and has served as an advisor to the PCA.
Harbhajan won’t be the lone cricketer to represent his state, with former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly to turn up for the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Meanwhile, Karnataka will be represented by Raghuram Bhatt, while Mumbai has chosen Sanjay Naik. Former IPL chairman Arun Dhumal will represent Himachal Pradesh, and Rajeev Shukla will attend on behalf of Uttar Pradesh. Jaydev Shah will represent Saurashtra, Pranav Amin will represent Baroda, and Tamil Nadu has named its secretary, RI Palani, as its nominee.
Interestingly, the report said, the BCCI reached out to other former cricketers to take up administrative roles, but none turned up. Recently, some reports named Sachin Tendulkar as an option, but the former batting legend was quick to release a statement and deny carrying any such intentions.
The BCCI president’s post has been vacant for a couple of months since Roger Binny stepped down upon turning 70, and it remains to be seen whether the board goes for another former cricketer for the top job.
