Sahibzada Farhan said his gun-fire celebration vs India was a spur-of-the-moment call, adding he “doesn’t care” how fans react.
Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan has no regrets about doing the ‘gun-fire’ celebration during the 2025 Asia Cup Super Four clash against India. After the match, he said he ‘doesn’t care’ about the reaction it got from fans and suggested that it didn’t have anything to do with the opponent, but was a spur-of-the-moment decision.
Farhan scored 58 off 45 balls in the match, the only half-century of the Pakistani innings, helping them reach 171/5 in 20 overs. Soon after reaching his half-century, he held his bat like an assault rifle to make a gun firing gesture in the air, looking at the Pakistani dressing room.
Though it might have been considered harmless and, at most, dramatic in any other match at any other time, it wasn’t the case for this game. The backdrop behind it was the reason: India played the game with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack on their minds, and their fans considered it provocative and in bad taste.
“That (celebration) was just a moment at that time,” Farhan said in a press conference after the match. “I do not do a lot of celebrations after scoring 50. But, it suddenly came to my mind that let’s have a celebration today. I did that. I don’t know how people will take it. I don’t care about that. And the rest, you know, you should play aggressive cricket wherever you play. It is not necessary that it is India. You should play aggressive cricket against every team, like we played today,” he added.
Pakistan now need to beat Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to have a chance at reaching the final. The match against Sri Lanka is scheduled for Tuesday, and Farhan hoped that Pakistan would continue to improve in powerplays.
“I think in the last few matches, what was missing was that we were not utilising power plays well. We were giving away early wickets. It is important to use the powerplays well and also not give away wickets. The way we played in power plays today, we did not give away early on wickets. God willing, our power play was also very good as we scored 90-something runs in 10 overs. We did collapse in the middle, but we will rectify it,” he concluded.
