Shreyas Iyer has taken a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to recurring back spasms and will miss the Irani Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have officially confirmed that India batter Shreyas Iyer has taken a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to fitness concerns. Iyer was part of the ongoing two-match Unofficial Test series between India A and Australia A in Lucknow and had led the hosts in the opening match before withdrawing from the second fixture.

In a statement the BCCI said that Iyer has experienced recurring back spasms and fitness while playing red-ball cricket due to which he has stepped aside from the format for the time being.

“Mr Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format,” the statement read.

“He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his fitness. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup,” he added.
