Veteran batter Nair was dropped from the unit, and Agarkar revealed that the team had higher expectations from the 33-year-old during India’s tour of England.

Team India head of selectors Ajit Agarkar named the 15-man squad for the two-match Test series against West Indies, slated to begin on the on he 2nd of October at Ahmedabad, on Thursday.

Veteran batter Karun Nair was dropped from the unit, and Agarkar revealed that the team had higher expectations from the 33-year-old during India’s tour of England.

Nair, who was given the green light for the series against the Englishmen on the road, could only manage a solitary half-century in his four Test outings in the island, which did not help his case.

“Frankly, we expected a little bit more,” he said.

“He’s played four Tests, but we’ve spoken about just one innings,” the 47-year-old added.

“It is the way it is. We feel we needed a little bit more at this point,” the former Indian pacer continued.

“We wish we could give everyone 15 or 20 Tests, but it doesn’t work that way,” he said.

Shubman Gill will lead the team while star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will serve as his deputy. Sai Sudharsan has been given the nod as has Devdutt Padikkal.

“Padikkal has been in the Test squad against Australia, and he played in Dharamshala, where he got a fifty. He has been in decent form with India A,” he added.

The first mach between the sides will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on the 2nd of October, while the second Test will be hosted at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on the 10th of October.
