Tom Abell has signed a contract extension with Somerset, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2028 season. The 32-year-old all-rounder debuted for Somerset in 2014 and has spent his entire career with the team after progressing through their academy.
Abell has played 278 matches for Somerset, scoring over 11,700 runs, including 24 centuries, and taking 62 wickets. He was instrumental in Somerset’s T20 Blast victories in 2023 and 2025.
“The club is a significant part of my life and my family’s. Representing Somerset is something I take great pride in. It’s been wonderful to be a Somerset player over the years, and I aim to continue driving the club’s success,” Abell shared on the club’s website.
“I’m a proud Somerset and Taunton local, and I’ve always wanted to play for Somerset. Being a one-club player means a lot to me, so I’m thrilled to extend my contract,” he added.
Abell became club captain in 2017, marking him as the first academy graduate to lead Somerset. He guided the team to a One Day Cup win at Lord’s in 2019 but stepped down as captain in 2023.
“Tom represents everything we value at Somerset County Cricket Club. His dedication, passion, and commitment to improvement are truly commendable,” said Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket.
“Over the years, Tom has evolved into an exceptional all-format cricketer and has played a key role in our recent achievements,” he added.
Abell has also become a regular in franchise cricket, showcasing his T20 skills. He was part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape team that won the 2024 SA20, where he scored 286 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 152.94. He is set to play for Southern Brave in the upcoming 2026 Hundred.
