As the IPL playoffs approach, teams are under pressure to perform. There’s little room for subpar players, leading to tough selection decisions. Some big names have not met expectations this season, making them vulnerable to being dropped.
1. Jitesh Sharma (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
Jitesh Sharma was key to RCB’s success last season, scoring 261 runs in 11 matches with an average of 37.28 and a strike rate of 176.25. However, this season’s performance is a stark contrast. He has only scored 63 runs in seven innings, averaging nine with a strike rate of 112.50. As RCB aims to retain their title, they may consider a different lineup without him as the playoffs approach.
2. Nicholas Pooran (Lucknow Super Giants)
Nicholas Pooran has struggled from the start. His issues were highlighted when he faced Sunil Narine in a Super Over against KKR and was dismissed while trying to play aggressively. So far, he has only managed 82 runs in eight matches, averaging 10.25 with a strike rate of 81.18. It may be wise for LSG to give him some time off to regroup and strengthen their middle order.
3. Trent Boult (Mumbai Indians)
Trent Boult has been a reliable bowler for Mumbai Indians, but this season has seen a drop in his performance. In the powerplay, he has gone wicketless in six overs, giving away 85 runs at an economy rate of 14.16. Overall, Boult has taken just two wickets in four matches, averaging 75.50 runs per wicket. Given his reputation for early breakthroughs, this decline is concerning. Taking a break might help him regain form.
The IPL is highly competitive, and even established players can be at risk of being left out due to underperformance. With the playoff race heating up, teams may have to make tough decisions. The next few weeks will show whether these players can bounce back or if they will sit out while their teams fight for success.
