The Sydney Sixers have hired James Hopes as their new head coach for the next two years after Greg Shipperd was let go. Hopes, 47, is currently the bowling coach for Punjab Kings in the IPL.

Shipperd was on a two-year contract but was dismissed midway through despite leading the team to the BBL 2025-26 final. He has also been replaced by Brad Haddin as the coach for New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup teams.

Hopes made his T20I and ODI debuts for Australia against New Zealand in February and March 2005. He played 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is, scoring a total of 1,431 International runs, with three half-centuries in ODIs.

He took 67 ODI and 10 T20I wickets, with a best ODI performance of 5/14 against Ireland. Originally from Queensland, Hopes played for Brisbane Heat for five seasons in the Big Bash League.

“I’m incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency and competitiveness,” Hopes said in a statement.

“I’m excited to work with a talented group and contribute to the Sixers’ future success in the BBL.”

Alongside his role with the Sixers, Hopes is also the bowling coach for Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket and has previously held similar positions with Delhi Capitals, Brisbane Heat, Queensland Bulls, Hobart Hurricanes, and Tasmanian Tigers.

The Sydney Sixers General Manager expressed enthusiasm about Hopes’ appointment, citing the valuable experience he brings.

“James is an exceptional cricket mind with a proven ability to develop players and foster high-performing teams,” Haynes said in a press release.

“His extensive experience in Australian domestic cricket and international franchise competitions makes him a perfect fit for the Sixers.

“We’re glad to welcome him as we move into an exciting new chapter.”
