Australia Women began their 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a strong 65-run win against South Africa Women on Saturday, June 13, at Old Trafford, Manchester.
In this impressive match, leg-spinner and all-rounder Georgia Wareham made significant contributions with both bat and ball. She scored 32 runs off 22 balls and formed a 58-run partnership with Ellyse Perry, helping Australia post a total of 172 for 8 in their 20 overs. Wareham also took 3 wickets for 13 runs, caught South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt, and ran out Marizane Kapp.
“It’s probably one of the better games I’ve played in a long time for Australia. Anytime I get to play for Australia, I just want to impact the game in any way possible, so to do that today was great. Hopefully, there’s more of this to come,” Wareham said after the match, as reported by Cricket.com.au.
Originally a leg-spinner, Wareham has also become an effective batter. After fluctuating in the batting order, she has now settled in the number 5 position, thanks to her experience in the Women’s Big Bash League helping her adjust to a more stable role.
“I’m happy to bat anywhere in this team. My experience batting at No. 5 in the Big Bash has really helped me in my current position for Australia,” she noted.
Australia fielded their entire spin bowling lineup of Wareham, captain Sophie Molineux, Ashleigh Gardner, and Alana King due to favorable conditions at Old Trafford. This spin quartet took eight of the ten South African wickets, restricting them to just 107 runs. Wareham highlighted the significance of their spin attack.
“It’s great to bowl together. We communicate about the pitch conditions and align our strategies. Spin plays a big role in our bowling lineup, and we aim to make an impact regardless of the pitch,” she explained.
The Australian team will next face Bangladesh Women in the T20 World Cup on June 17 at Headingley.
