India will be looking to secure its maiden trophy at the 50-over World Cup in the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.

India’s best performance at the tournament until now has been runner-up, losing out in the final on two occasions; 2005 and 2017.

It was comprehensively defeated in the final of the 2005 World Cup in South Africa by Australia. Karen Rolton’s unbeaten 107 and Lisa Sthalekar’s 55 were enough to push Australia to a competitive 215/4 in its 50 overs before India imploded in its chase. Despite reaching a respectable 54/2, four run-outs hamstrung the Indian chase as it collapsed to 117 and handed Australia a 98-run victory.

Its second final defeat came in more heartbreaking circumstances. Facing hosts England in the final of the 2017 World Cup at Lord’s, its bowling did an impressive job of restricting England to just 228/7. Harmanpreet Kaur and Poonam Raut then had the chase under control, with India requiring less than 100 runs with eight wickets in the shed.

However, the dismissal of Harmanpreet precipitated an Indian collapse which culminated in it falling nine runs short of the total, with the wait for a maiden 50-over trophy consigned to continue.
