Italy captain Wayne Madsen will miss the rest of the match against Scotland after dislocating his left shoulder. This injury occurred during the opening game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
The injury took place on the third ball of the fourth over when Madsen attempted to dive and stop a shot from Scotland’s Munsey. He fell awkwardly onto one of the practice pitches and, in visible pain, clutched his shoulder before leaving the field with help from the physio.
His absence is a significant setback for Italy, and it is unclear if he will participate in the tournament’s remaining matches.
On a positive note, Italy won the toss against Scotland and chose to field in their World Cup opener, marking their debut in a major International Cricket Council event after 45 years.
The Italian national cricket federation was established in 1980, and Italy finished second behind the Netherlands in the European qualifiers. They become the 25th nation to compete in the tournament.
Scotland was initially eliminated from the tournament but was later added as a substitute for Bangladesh in Group C after the ICC denied a request from the Bangladesh Cricket Board to relocate their matches to Sri Lanka due to security issues.
Captain Wayne Madsen, who has Italian roots through his grandmother, expressed the team’s desire to make a mark at this World Cup.
Italy’s lineup features two sets of Australian brothers with Italian heritage: Anthony and Justin Mosca, and Harry and Benjamin Manenti.
In their earlier match, Scotland lost to the West Indies but captain Richie Berrington remained optimistic about setting a strong total and was pleased to bat first.
Later on Monday, Zimbabwe will face Oman in Group B in Colombo, while 2024 runner-up South Africa will take on Canada in Ahmedabad.
