Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh will miss the team’s first match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 against Ireland. The all-rounder had planned to open the batting with vice-captain Travis Head, but he is dealing with a groin issue that affects his mobility.

In his place, star batter Steven Smith has been added to the squad to cover for Marsh in case he is unable to play in future matches.

“Marsh is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort that restricts his movement. Scans have revealed internal testicular bleeding, requiring him to rest and undergo rehabilitation. His return will depend on symptom improvement and medical guidance,” said Cricket Australia in a statement.

“Standby player Steven Smith will travel to Sri Lanka to acclimatise and prepare, should he be needed,” the statement added.
