Australia captain Mitchell Marsh will miss the team’s opening match against Ireland in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Steve Smith is set to join the team in Sri Lanka as a replacement, while Travis Head will lead the squad at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
“We’ve had a few injuries. Marsh got hurt during a training session recently, and unfortunately, no one could help him,” said Travis Head.
The injury occurred in the groin area, affecting his movement, according to the board.
“Scans showed internal bleeding, and he will need time for rest and rehabilitation. His return will depend on his recovery and medical guidance,” Cricket Australia stated.
“Steve Smith will travel to Sri Lanka to get used to the conditions and prepare in case he is needed,” added CA’s announcement.
Smith hasn’t played a T20I since February 2024 but remains a crucial player for the Test squad. He was not included in the World Cup selection despite strong performances in the Big Bash League.
Former Australian player Mark Waugh commented on Smith’s inclusion, saying, “Better late than never. Hurry up!”
Tim David is also unavailable for the first game, and both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are out of the tournament.
