England achieved a solid five-wicket victory over Scotland in the 23rd Match of Group C at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, held at Eden Gardens. After opting to bowl first, England restricted Scotland to 152 runs in 19.4 overs and then chased down the target in 18.2 overs, led by a strong half-century from Tom Banton and effective bowling from Adil Rashid.

Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer shine in bowling

England won the toss and chose to field, striking early with Jofra Archer who picked up a wicket quickly. George Munsey was dismissed for 4, and Brandon McMullen went out for a duck, putting Scotland under pressure. Michael Jones fought back with an entertaining 33 runs off 20 balls, hitting five boundaries and a six.

Scotland’s innings relied on captain Richie Berrington, who scored 49 runs off 32 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. He built important partnerships, including one with Tom Bruce, who added 24 runs off 18 balls. Their effort raised hopes for Scotland to exceed 160 runs.

However, England’s spinners regained control during the middle overs. Adil Rashid took the spotlight with three wickets for 36 runs in his four overs, dismantling key partnerships. Liam Dawson also contributed with two wickets, while Archer and Jamie Overton helped maintain pressure. Scotland ended up at 152, losing their last wickets quickly.

Tough start for England in the chase

England’s chase got off to a rocky start. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler were out early, leaving the team at 10 for 2 and giving Scotland a glimmer of hope as Bradley Currie and McMullen took quick wickets.

Jacob Bethell and Banton then steadied the innings. Bethell scored 32 runs off 28 balls, rotating the strike effectively while Banton found his rhythm.

Banton was pivotal, scoring 63 off 41 balls with four boundaries and three sixes, swinging the match in England’s favor. His timing and placement helped maintain a manageable run rate.

Even though Harry Brook and Sam Curran fell cheaply, Will Jacks ensured steady progress. Curran added 28 runs off 20 balls, while Jacks supported with 16 runs, guiding England to victory in 18.2 overs.

Scotland’s bowlers attempted to keep the game close. Currie, Brad Wheal, and Michael Leask each took a wicket, while Oliver Davidson impressed with figures of 1 for 12 in two overs. However, Mark Watt struggled, giving away 43 runs in three overs, which eased England’s pressure. Ultimately, England’s experience in tight matches and solid bowling secured their win.
