New Zealand delivered a strong performance in Chennai, winning against Canada by eight wickets and securing a place in the Super Eights of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. After a previous loss to South Africa, the Black Caps bounced back by chasing down a target of 174 runs with 29 balls remaining.
Earlier, Canada’s innings was led by an impressive 110 runs off 65 balls from Yuvraj Samra, helping them reach 173/4. His innings featured 11 fours and six sixes, giving the Associate team a solid total despite New Zealand taking regular wickets in the latter stages. A 116-run opening partnership set a good foundation for Canada, but the Black Caps maintained control in the final overs.
In response, New Zealand faced a slight challenge when Tim Seifert and Finn Allen were dismissed early. However, Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips built a successful partnership, effectively handling the Canadian bowlers. Phillips especially stood out, scoring 76 runs off just 36 balls, including a quick fifty off 22 balls that shifted the momentum. Ravindra played a steady innings, reaching his half-century in 35 balls and guiding the team to victory in the 16th over.
