Australia has come under fire from former players following their exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Selection choices made after their group stage departure have drawn criticism, especially from Glenn McGrath, who has been vocal about his views.

The 2021 champions were eliminated after losing consecutive matches to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Reports suggest this season marks one of Australia’s worst performances in recent years.

McGrath Questions Cameron Green’s Role

McGrath raised concerns over the selection of Cameron Green instead of Steve Smith.

Green was chosen as an all-rounder but had minimal impact in the tournament, scoring only 24 runs in three matches. He made 21 against Ireland but finished with a duck and three runs in the subsequent games against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Additionally, he bowled only seven balls during the event.

McGrath expressed his views straightforwardly.

McGrath said:

“Then what the selectors are saying is that he’s a better player than Steve Smith. If he’s not bowling, I just can’t see how he justifies a spot in that side.”

The decision to select Green, expected to contribute with both bat and ball, raised doubts as he failed to perform in either area. Australia showcased uncertainty in their strategy under pressure.

Debate Intensifies Over Green vs. Smith

The choice to exclude Smith has sparked considerable discussion. Prior to the tournament, Green had shown some adaptability in a T20I series against Pakistan, batting in various positions and bowling five overs. However, his overall performance fell short of expectations.

Green scored 171 runs in the Ashes series against England with an average of 24.43, taking four wickets across 62 overs. His difficulties against spin became apparent during the World Cup, particularly on Sri Lankan pitches.

In contrast, Smith had strong performances in the Big Bash League, playing for the Sydney Sixers. He averaged nearly 60 and scored a rapid century off 42 balls, among the fastest in BBL history. Many believed his experience and skill against spin could have benefited Australia.

Greater Concerns for Australia

McGrath added:

“We said at the start of this World Cup that we were concerned about Australia. All of a sudden, the aura of that Australian team is no longer there when other teams play it. Unfortunately, it’s not surprising.”

Australia entered the tournament as one of the favorites but lost their opening match to Zimbabwe, followed by an eight-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka. Their exit was confirmed when Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland was canceled due to rain.

Australia will now play Oman in their final group match, which will be inconsequential. The team aims to end on a high note, but significant questions regarding selection and strategy remain.
