Australia is set to play its first Test series in South Africa since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, known as Sandpaper Gate. This tour will also feature three ODIs before the Tests start.

The ODI series will occur from September 24 to 30. The Test series will commence afterward, with the first Test beginning on October 9 at Kingsmead. The second Test will take place on October 18 at St George’s Park, and the final Test will be at Newlands Cricket Ground starting October 27. Notably, Newlands was the site of the 2018 scandal.

Impact of Sandpaper Gate on Australian Cricket

The Sandpaper Gate incident in 2018 significantly affected Australian cricket. Cameron Bancroft was caught using sandpaper to manipulate the ball during a Test at Newlands.

Bancroft, along with Captain Steve Smith and Vice-Captain David Warner, faced severe penalties. Smith and Warner received one-year bans, while Bancroft was banned for nine months. Smith resigned as captain, and Warner stepped down from his role.

Tim Paine was later named captain to help the team recover from this crisis.

The fallout impacted more than just the players. James Sutherland, then head of Cricket Australia, publicly apologized and called for an assessment of team culture. The scandal prompted significant leadership changes, leading to the departure of Sutherland and other senior officials. Head coach Darren Lehmann also resigned, despite being cleared, to support the team’s future.

Steve Smith Returns to Cape Town

Steve Smith will return to Newlands eight years after his last visit. David Warner, who has retired from International cricket, will not join this tour. However, several players from the 2018 match, including Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Starc, will play.

This tour is more than just a series; it marks a return to a site linked to a major crisis in Australian cricket. All eyes will be on the Australian team as they aim to focus solely on the game while stepping back onto South African soil.
