Sahibzada Farhan has made headlines with his recent performances, but as The Hundred auction nears, the focus has shifted beyond his Cricket statistics. The 29-year-old Pakistan opener is the top run-scorer in the ongoing T20 World Cup. He expressed hope for a contract in The Hundred, but acknowledged that the final decision is out of his control. Farhan remains optimistic about his chances despite uncertainty regarding the participation of Pakistan players, especially amid rumors involving IPL teams.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reminded all eight franchises of The Hundred that selections must be based solely on merit. Any signs of discrimination will result in disciplinary actions. This reminder follows reports that four IPL-owned teams—Mumbai Indians (MI London), Lucknow Super Giants (Manchester Super Giants), Sunrisers Hyderabad (Sunrisers Leeds), and Delhi Capitals (Southern Brave)—might overlook Pakistani players in the auction.

Since 2008, Pakistani cricketers have been absent from the IPL due to political tensions, which has also affected their chances in other leagues with IPL-backed franchises. Farhan is among over 950 players registered for the March auction, setting his base price at £50,000. Over 60 Pakistani players are included, but their participation may face challenges due to scheduling clashes with Pakistan’s upcoming Test tour of the West Indies.

Despite the uncertainty, Farhan remains composed. Ahead of Pakistan’s Super Eight match against England in the T20 World Cup, he emphasized that players can only control their on-field performances.

“It’s not in our hands who picks us and who doesn’t. Wherever we get an opportunity and whoever is interested can pick us. We’re ready to play that league, and where people aren’t interested is [not something we focus on]. I am hopeful of being picked up. Everyone wants to play the best leagues. The Hundred is one of the best leagues. Let’s hope for the best,” Farhan said at a press conference.

His T20 stock has risen in the last six months, starting with impressive displays at the T20 Asia Cup and now in this World Cup, where he has consistently excelled. A century against Namibia showcased his form, and he leads the tournament’s run charts.

In the first five seasons of The Hundred, only nine Pakistani players have participated. Franchises have cited International commitments and late withdrawals, notably from players like Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, as significant concerns.
