Former Indian captain and broadcaster Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the delays in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), with many games finishing well past the scheduled time.

T20 matches are expected to conclude in three hours, but IPL games often exceed this limit. The BCCI has implemented strict guidelines, including penalties for slow over rates, yet matches like the one between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have lasted over four hours.

Gavaskar pointed out that players frequently pause the game, which adds to the delays, noting the issues with players entering the field during play to provide drinks.

“It’s common to see reserve players walking onto the field to give water to players near the boundary. This shouldn’t be allowed as it adds more people to the field during play, even if it’s between deliveries. During strategic time-outs, it’s not unusual for many others to be on the field, including upcoming batters. This needs to change. Only two reserve players and two coaching staff members should be allowed on the ground,” Gavaskar mentioned in his column for Mid-Day.

He referred to former Australian cricketer Richie Benaud, who emphasized the importance of keeping the field clear.

“Richie Benaud once advised me that the field should only be occupied by players and officials. Unless I’m doing a pitch report or TV show, I avoid stepping onto the field. I hope the BCCI will also prevent committee members with all-access passes from entering the playing area,” he added.

Gavaskar also suggested ways to cut down delays after a wicket falls.

“Since all batters are already in the dugout, the time allowed can be reduced from two minutes to one. If a batter is not ready after a couple of warnings, penalty runs should be applied,” he wrote.
