Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that the absence of senior players Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Steve Smith from the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh does not mean they are finished in International T20 Cricket.
Bailey emphasized that these players have “not been dropped.” The selectors are looking to try out new talent as Australia prepares for future ICC events.
The Australian squad for the three-match T20I series in Bangladesh, set for June 17, 19, and 21, features a new 16-member lineup. Notably, senior bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were also excluded, as management chose to rest them for a busy Test season ahead.
The lack of Maxwell and Stoinis has garnered attention since both were crucial to Australia’s win in the 2021 T20 World Cup and have been key players for years.
Regarding these selection choices, Bailey mentioned that the management aims to build a stronger team and explore new player combinations, with important tournaments still some time away.
“It’s not the end of the road. I wouldn’t call it dropped per se, but I understand that they’re not within the squad. Given our situation in the T20 cycle and after our World Cup result, it’s a good chance to evaluate some different players,” Bailey stated, according to ESPNcricinfo.
He also highlighted that Australia’s goal is to remain competitive while developing a broader talent pool for the future. Bailey reiterated that experienced players still have opportunities despite their current exclusions.
“I know that whenever we take a team away, the expectation is to win and for those players to perform. This is an important time for the T20 group to start developing new players in various roles. But that doesn’t mean it’s the last we’ve seen of those three,” he added.
Maxwell, now 37, has faced challenges with consistency in recent T20 matches, scoring only one half-century in his last 20 innings. Stoinis, who turns 37 in August, continues to excel in the franchise circuit and has been a top performer for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.
