Former England captain Michael Vaughan is puzzled by Jofra Archer not being selected for England’s first home Test against New Zealand while continuing to play for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Vaughan highlights that the BCCI and ECB have an agreement that keeps English players in the IPL for its entire duration. This has caused tension, especially since England’s Test matches start just days after the IPL ends. He believes the ECB should exercise more authority over its players, emphasizing that central contracts should take precedence over franchise agreements.

“I’m sure he’ll be in the squad (for the second Test). It comes midway through June. I think we have a problem in English Cricket at the moment because Jofra was obviously staying for the full IPL. There’s some contract that the ECB has with the BCCI that allows all players to stay for the duration. If that’s the case, I have a problem with England’s contracts because Jofra has been supported by them for a few years on a very generous contract. So who holds the key to that? I believe the International contract outweighs any franchise,” Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

Vaughan is worried that despite Archer’s central contract with England, he isn’t playing in a Test match, suggesting that the franchise league is being prioritized. Representing one’s country in Test matches should still be the highest achievement for players.

“Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic. I love them for the players. But I do feel that if we start to put domestic leagues over and above a Test match, I think there’s a real problem. England needs to make a decision because many have spoken about this recently. If you’re playing for England in a Test match, players should be back home. That’s what your central contract states. If I were Rob Key, the director of cricket, or Brendon McCullum, the coach, I would want my best bowler playing in that first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. Not here,” Vaughan added.

There has been significant discussion among former England players about the choice between playing in the IPL or for the national team in Test matches. Another former captain, Sir Alastair Cook, suggested that Jacob Bethell should leave Royal Challengers Bangalore to play for Warwickshire before the Test season, a view opposed by Kevin Pietersen, although Bethell had not played a game for the defending champions at that time.

Jofra Archer is set to play at least two more matches for the Rajasthan Royals in this IPL season, and if they qualify for the playoffs, he could compete in at least one additional match.

England’s three-match Test series against New Zealand begins on June 4, just four days after the IPL final.
